This project was located on the edge of the village of Great Lumley, in County Durham, at a view point on the Weardale Way. The piece incorporates a small picture frame, which frames the spectacular view looking north towards Newcastle, and encompasses the urban, rural and industrial landscape.
The site is very prominent being passed by everyone entering and leaving the village. It was therefore very important for me to make a piece which was sensitive to it’s position and complimented the wonderful view.
Due to the exposed nature of the site there appeared to be a continuous wind and several older residents mentioned that the corner of the village had been referred to as ‘the corner of the 7 winds’. I have previously used the 4 Elements as subject matter for work and have found it to be a rich and evocative vein - I began to think that it might be a suitable theme here - the view itself could symbolise Earth; the ever present wind for Air, shown by a flock of birds circling the top of the column; the beautiful sunsets across the valley for Fire, carved across the front of the bench; and the river Wear snaking its way through the valley symbolising Water.
It was a privilege to work in the village and to meet with such a diversity of people both resident and passing through. The project was spread over several months which allowed me to build relationships with many people who witnessed the gradual process of the work. The response from people as the work started to take shape was wonderful - interestingly people liked the piece and particularly appreciated the craftsmanship without knowing the symbolism, once enlightened they were delighted and looked forward to being able to explain it to their friends and family.
